There is strong evidence to suggest that speed cameras are effective at reducing speeding and crashes. However, more than 50% of drivers polled think that cameras are more for raising revenue than for safety. In 2002, the annual death toll on NSW roads climbed and most deaths were assessed by the State Government as being related to speed.
In NSW, a sample of 20 cameras has shown a decrease of more than 20% in the number of crashes per kilometre per year near the cameras. Consequently, there is strong support for fixed speed cameras provided they are highly visible and located at places where there is significant crash history. The revenue raised from fixed speed cameras should be directed towards road safety research and community projects.
